The problem with most curly extension work

Curly clients tell me a version of the same story. They found someone who could do extensions, and the extensions looked fine for about a week, until the first wash. Then the extension hair dried straight, or dried into a curl that was not quite their curl, and suddenly there were two different heads of hair on one person.

That is not bad luck. That is what happens when extension hair gets matched to your color and your length, but nobody thinks about your pattern.

Curl is a matching problem, not a difficulty problem

There is nothing about curly hair that makes it unsuitable for extensions. What curly hair does is punish a lazy match.

Straight hair is forgiving. If the extension hair is slightly off, it still hangs the same direction as everything around it. Curly hair does not hang, it springs, and it springs at a specific tightness. Get that tightness wrong and the eye catches it immediately, no matter how good the install was.

So the work is in the matching:

• Pattern first, then color. I look at how your curl actually behaves, dry and unstretched, before we talk about anything else.
• Method chosen to hide the transition. Some methods sit better under texture than others, and which one wins depends on your density and where your curl starts.
• Placement that respects the spring. Curly hair pulls up as it dries. Length has to be planned for where the hair ends up, not where it hangs wet.

The advantage of one chair for both

I am DevaCurl Level 2 Advanced certified, which means I cut curls the way curls need to be cut, dry and shape by shape. I am also certified in nine extension methods. Those two things living in the same person is the entire point.

When your cut and your extensions are planned by different people, they negotiate. Your curl stylist works around extensions they did not choose, and your extension stylist works around a shape they did not cut. Something always gives.

Here, your cut is designed around your extensions, and your extensions are chosen around your curl. Nothing has to be worked around.

If you only want the cut, that is fine too

Not everyone who sits in my chair for curls wants extensions, and I have curl clients who have never had a single strand added. A Deva Cut on its own is a real service here, not a lead-in to a sales conversation. If you come in for a cut and extensions never come up, that is a completely normal appointment.
