Finding a DevaCurl stylist in the Valley

Curly clients tend to find their stylist by certification, and for good reason. A wet cut from someone who does not work with texture regularly is how a lot of people ended up cutting their own layers at home out of self-defense.

I am DevaCurl Level 2 Advanced certified and I have been cutting curls in Tempe for years, alongside the extension work that is my main specialty. Curl clients come to me for cuts alone, and that is a completely normal appointment here.

What a curly appointment looks like

We start with your hair the way you actually wear it. Clean, dry, styled normally. I want to see the real pattern, not a stretched or flattened version of it.

I cut dry, curl by curl. Every curl gets looked at where it sits. That is slower than a wet cut, and it is the only way the shape you leave with is the shape you keep.

We talk about what happens at home. A good curly cut that gets styled wrong is still a bad hair week. Part of the appointment is making sure you can repeat it.

The part most curl stylists cannot offer

Here is where this gets different from most DevaCurl listings you will find.

Extensions are my specialty. I am certified in nine methods, and a large part of my practice is women with fine, thinning, or fragile hair. So if you have curls and you want length or volume, you do not need two stylists.

That matters more than it sounds like it does. Curly extension work fails most often at the match, when the added hair does not spring the way your hair springs. Being the person who cuts your curl and the person who chooses your extension hair means the two are planned as one thing.

If that is what you are after, the curly extensions page goes into how that matching actually works.

Come in and let me see your curl

Curl is not something I can assess from a photo. Book a complimentary consultation, come in with your hair as it normally is, and I will tell you honestly what I would do with it.

Is this right for you?

Let’s be honest about fit.

A great fit if you…

  • Are searching specifically for a DevaCurl trained stylist
  • Want your curls cut dry, curl by curl
  • Have curly hair and also want extensions from the same stylist
  • Have had a wet cut that dried into a shape you did not expect

We should talk first if you…

  • Want your curl pattern straightened away rather than shaped

Not sure where you land? That’s exactly what the complimentary consultation is for.

Common questions

What does Level 2 Advanced actually mean?

DevaCurl certification runs in tiers. Level 2 Advanced is the tier past the foundational training, covering more advanced shaping and a wider range of curl patterns and densities. In practice it means I have been formally trained and tested on curly cutting rather than picking it up as I went.

Why do curls need to be cut dry?

Because wet curls lie to you. Water stretches a curl to a length it will not keep, so a shape that looks balanced wet can dry into something completely different. Cutting dry means I am cutting the curl in the shape you will actually walk around in, which is why dry cutting is standard for curly work.

Do I need to arrive with my hair a certain way?

Come with your curls clean, dry, and styled the way you normally wear them. Not freshly straightened, not scraped into a bun. I need to see what your hair does on a normal day, because that is the hair I am cutting.

Are you a curl stylist or an extension stylist?

Both, and that combination is unusual. Extensions are my specialty and I am certified in nine methods. The DevaCurl certification is the one that lets me handle the curly side properly, so curly clients do not have to split their hair across two stylists who never talk to each other.
